Reglan Solution

Pronunciation: MET-oh-KLOE-pra-mide
Generic Name: Metoclopramide
Brand Name: Reglan

Reglan Solution may cause a serious movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia, which may be permanent. The risk may be increased in patients who use high doses or who take Reglan Solution for a long period of time. The risk may also be increased in the elderly, women, and diabetic patients. Tell your doctor right away if you develop muscle problems with your arms; legs; or your tongue, face, mouth, or jaw (eg, tongue sticking out, puffing of cheeks, mouth puckering, chewing movements).

Reglan Solution should usually not be used for longer than 12 weeks.

Reglan Solution is used for:

Treating symptoms of a certain digestive problem in diabetic patients (diabetic gastroparesis). It is also used to prevent nausea and vomiting after surgery or cancer chemotherapy. It is may be used during certain medical procedures (eg, small bowel intubation, stomach or bowel x-ray). It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Reglan Solution is a gastrointestinal stimulant and antinauseant. It works by increasing the movement of the stomach and intestines to help move food and acid out of the stomach more quickly. It also works in certain areas in the brain to decrease nausea.

Do NOT use Reglan Solution if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Reglan Solution

  • you have seizures (eg, epilepsy); bleeding, blockage, or perforation in your stomach or intestines; or tumors on your adrenal gland (pheochromocytoma)

  • you are taking cabergoline or pergolide

  • you are taking medicines, such as phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine) that may cause extrapyramidal reactions (abnormal, involuntary muscle movements of the head, neck, or limbs). Check with your doctor if you are unsure if any of your medicine may cause extrapyramidal reactions.

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Reglan Solution:

Some medical conditions may interact with Reglan Solution. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding

  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement

  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances

  • if you have a history of mental or mood problems (eg, depression) or suicidal thoughts or actions

  • if you have a history of asthma, heart failure, high blood pressure, diabetes, Parkinson disease, blood problems (eg, porphyria), kidney problems, liver problems (eg, cirrhosis), breast cancer, or low levels of an enzyme called methemoglobin reductase

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Reglan Solution. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) (eg, phenelzine) because the risk of serious side effects (eg, high blood pressure, seizures) may be increased

  • Anticholinergic medicine (eg, hyoscyamine) or narcotic pain medicines (eg, codeine) because they may decrease Reglan Solution's effectiveness

  • Acetaminophen, benzodiazepines (eg, diazepam), cyclosporine, insulin, levodopa, phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine), sedatives (eg, zolpidem), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine), succinylcholine, or tetracycline because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Reglan Solution

  • Cabergoline, digoxin, or pergolide because their effectiveness may be decreased by Reglan Solution

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Reglan Solution may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Reglan Solution:

Use Reglan Solution as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Reglan Solution comes with an extra patient information sheet called a Medication Guide. Read it carefully. Read it again each time you get Reglan Solution refilled.

  • Reglan Solution is usually given as an injection at your doctor's office, hospital, or clinic. If you will be using Reglan Solution at home, a health care provider will teach you how to use it. Be sure you understand how to use Reglan Solution. Follow the procedures you are taught when you use a dose. Contact your health care provider if you have any questions.

  • Do not use Reglan Solution if it contains particles, is cloudy or discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged.

  • Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Ask your health care provider how to dispose of these materials after use. Follow all local rules for disposal.

  • If you miss a dose of Reglan Solution, contact your doctor right away.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Reglan Solution.

Important safety information:

  • Reglan Solution may cause drowsiness or dizziness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Reglan Solution with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.

  • Do not drink alcohol or use medicines that may cause drowsiness (eg, sleep aids, muscle relaxers) while you are using Reglan Solution without first checking with your doctor; it may add to their effects. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines may cause drowsiness.

  • Diabetes patients - Reglan Solution may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely. Ask your doctor before you change the dose of your diabetes medicine.

  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Reglan Solution before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.

  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a possibly fatal syndrome that can be caused by Reglan Solution. Symptoms may include fever; stiff muscles; confusion; abnormal thinking; fast or irregular heartbeat; and sweating. Contact your doctor at once if you have any of these symptoms.

  • Some patients who take Reglan Solution may develop muscle movements that they cannot control. This is more likely to happen in elderly patients, especially women. The chance that this will happen or that it will become permanent is greater in those who take Reglan Solution in higher doses or for a long time. Muscle problems may also occur after short-term treatment with low doses. Tell your doctor at once if you have muscle problems with your arms; legs; or your tongue, face, mouth, or jaw (eg, tongue sticking out, puffing of cheeks, mouth puckering, chewing movements) while taking Reglan Solution.

  • Patients who take Reglan Solution may be at increased risk for new or worsening mental or mood changes (eg, depression) or suicidal thoughts or actions. Watch patients who take Reglan Solution closely. Contact the doctor at once if new, worsened, or sudden symptoms such as depressed mood or any unusual change in mood or behavior occur. Contact the doctor right away if any signs of suicidal thoughts or actions occur.

  • Reglan Solution may increase the amount of a certain hormone (prolactin) in your blood. Symptoms may include enlarged breasts, missed menstrual period, decreased sexual ability, or nipple discharge. Contact your doctor right away if you experience any of these symptoms.

  • Lab tests, including liver and kidney function tests, may be performed while you use Reglan Solution. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.

  • Use Reglan Solution with caution in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially drowsiness, confusion, and uncontrolled muscle movements, including tardive dyskinesia.

  • Reglan Solution should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed. The risk of developing uncontrolled muscle movements may be greater in children.

  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Reglan Solution while you are pregnant. Reglan Solution is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Reglan Solution, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Blistex topical

Generic Name: allantoin, camphor, and phenol (topical) (AL an toin, KAM for, FEEN ol TOP i kal)

Brand Names: Blistex

What is allantoin, camphor, and phenol?

Allantoin is a skin proctant.

Camphor and phenol are mild topical (for the skin) pain relievers.

The combination of allantoin, camphor, and phenol is used to treat pain, itching, or severe lip dryness caused by chapped lips or cold sores (fever blisters).

This medication will not cure herpes simplex, a virus that causes cold sores.

Allantoin, camphor, and phenol may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know about allantoin, camphor, and phenol?

You should not use this medication if you are allergic to allantoin, camphor, or phenol, or to any of the other ingredients of the ointment, including menthol, bees wax, glycerin, lanolin, mineral oil, and paraffin.

Use this medication exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use it in larger amounts or for longer than recommended.

Do not apply this medication over large surfaces of your skin, or cover treated skin with a bandage or other covering.

It is best not to apply this medication more than 4 times daily. This medication will not cure herpes simplex, a virus that causes cold sores.

What should I discuss with my health care provider before using allantoin, camphor, and phenol?

You should not use this medication if you are allergic to allantoin, camphor, or phenol, or to any of the other ingredients of the ointment, including menthol, bees wax, glycerin, lanolin, mineral oil, and paraffin. This medication is not expected to be harmful to use during pregnancy or while breast-feeding a baby.

How should I take allantoin, camphor, and phenol?

Use this medication exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use it in larger amounts or for longer than recommended.

To treat chapped lips, apply enough of this medication to completely moisten the lips.

Remove any excess medication with a clean tissue.

Do not apply this medication over large surfaces of your skin, or cover treated skin with a bandage or other covering.

For best results when treating a cold sore, use this medication when you first notice any symptoms such as tingling, itching, or other discomfort.

Wait at least 5 minutes before applying lipstick or other cosmetics over the treated lip areas.

It is best not to apply this medication more than 4 times daily. Store the ointment at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Since this medication is used as needed, it is not likely that you will be on a dosing schedule. Using extra ointment to make up a missed dose will not make the medication more effective.

What happens if I overdose?

An overdose of this medication is unlikely to occur.

What should I avoid while using allantoin, camphor, and phenol?

This medication is for use only on the skin. Avoid getting the medication in your mouth or eyes. Rinse with water if this occurs.

Avoid using this medication on a deep skin wound or on freshly shaven skin.

Allantoin, camphor, and phenol side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using this medication if you have severe burning, stinging, redness, or other irritation after applying the ointment.

Less serious side effects are more likely, and you may have none at all. Mild tingling or a cool feeling are normal when applying menthol or camphor to the skin.

The ointment may leave a white residue on your lips.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

What other drugs will affect allantoin, camphor, and phenol?

It is not likely that other drugs you take orally or inject will have an effect on topically applied allantoin, camphor, and phenol. But many drugs can interact with each other. Tell your doctor about all medications you use. This includes prescription, over-the-counter, vitamin, and herbal products. Do not start a new medication without telling your doctor.

Benemid

Generic Name: probenecid (proe BEN a sid)

Brand Names: Benemid

What is Benemid (probenecid)?

Probenecid helps your body pass uric acid out through the urine, which lowers the levels of uric acid in the body.

Probenecid is used to treat gout and gouty arthritis. Probenecid is also sometimes given together with penicillin antibiotics to make them more effective.

Probenecid may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know about Benemid (probenecid)?

You should not use this medication if you are allergic to probenecid, or if you have uric acid kidney stones, a gout attack that has already started, or a blood cell disorder such as anemia, or decreased white blood cells. Probenecid should not be given to a child younger than 2 years old.

Before taking probenecid, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have kidney disease, a history of stomach ulcer, or if you have ever had kidney stones.

Drink plenty of water to prevent kidney stones while you are taking probenecid.

Probenecid may be only part of a complete program of treatment that also includes diet, other medications, and mineral supplements. Follow your doctor's instructions.

Call your doctor at once if you have worsening gout symptoms, severe pain in your side or lower back, blood in your urine, swelling, fever, pale or yellowed skin, or dark-colored urine.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Benemid (probenecid)?

You should not use this medication if you are allergic to probenecid, or if you have:

  • uric acid kidney stones;

Before taking probenecid, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have:

  • kidney disease;

  • a history of stomach ulcer; or

  • if you have ever had kidney stones.

If you have any of these conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take probenecid.

Probenecid may be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. It is not known whether probenecid passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Probenecid should not be given to a child younger than 2 years old.

How should I take Benemid (probenecid)?

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take it in larger amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

To be sure this medication is not causing harmful effects, your blood or urine may need to be tested on a regular basis. Do not miss any scheduled appointments.

If you are taking probenecid together with an antibiotic, be sure to read the medication guide or patient instructions provided with each of your medications. Do not change your doses or medication schedule without advice from your doctor.

If you need to have any type of surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are taking probenecid. This medication may affect your body's response to anesthesia. Store probenecid at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to take the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
